Elafonisi is a must-see beach located on a small island just off Crete’s southwestern coast. Known for its rose-colored sand and crystal-clear aquamarine water, Elafonisi is one of the top places to visit in Crete. The sand’s pink hue comes from shells that have washed up over time. It can get crowded during peak season, so it’s best to arrive early.

The Samaria Gorge, a UNESCO-listed site in southwest Crete, is 16 km long, making it one of Europe’s longest gorges and a World Biosphere Reserve. You can hike through the gorge, starting at Xyloskalo at 1200 m elevation and descending to sea level, finishing at the village of Agia Roumeli. The 15 km trail offers spectacular views of the White Mountains. At the end of the trail, Agia Roumeli has a secluded beach perfect for resting after the hike. Mount Ida, also known as the “Mountain of the Goddess,” is the highest peak on Crete at 2456 meters. It’s part of the Psiloritis Natural Park, a UNESCO Global Geopark. You can hike to the summit starting from Mygero refuge along a 9 km trail with a 900 m elevation gain, making for a steep ascent. Comfortable hiking shoes are a must for this trail.
