Las Palmas, the capital, is a must-visit. Founded in 1478, the city is rich in history and culture. Don’t miss the Jardín Botánico Canario Viera y Clavijo, located just 9 km from the city center. This impressive botanical garden features around 500 plant species native to the Canary Islands.
Tamadaba Natural Park, situated in the island’s northwest, is a protected and pristine area. It offers a mix of ravines, rugged coastlines with towering cliffs, mountains, and one of the island’s best-preserved pine forests. The park is a paradise for hikers, with trails that provide breathtaking views. Be sure to check out Mirador del Balcón, an incredible scenic viewpoint perched atop high sea cliffs.
Maspalomas Dunes, located on the south coast, resemble a small desert by the sea. This protected nature reserve features dynamic sand dunes and is one of the wildest areas in Gran Canaria. The reserve includes hiking trails and the expansive Playa de Maspalomas beach nestled against the dunes.
Palmitos Park, a large botanical garden and zoo, is just 11 km from Maspalomas. The park has various sections including an aviary, an aquarium, and a garden with the island’s largest orchid collection and over 160 types of cacti. It’s especially popular for its dolphin shows and is a fantastic place to visit with kids.
The charming mountain town of Teror in northern Gran Canaria is known for its well-preserved old town. The main street, Calle Real de la Plaza, features colorful houses with wooden balconies. Teror Old Town is protected as a historical monument, and an open-air market takes place near the church every Sunday.
Finally, Roque Nublo, a 60-meter tall basalt monolith, crowns a 1700-meter peak. Formed by a volcanic eruption 4.5 million years ago, this finger-shaped rock is located in the island’s center and offers awe-inspiring views. Nearby, you’ll find other unique rock formations like Roque del Fraile and La Rana in Nublo Rural Park.
