Flying to America just got a bit more complicated for those with hand luggage. New rules have been put in place about what you can bring, specifically focusing on powders. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has recently announced these new restrictions.
For passengers flying into the U.S., powders in carry-on bags will now be limited in size. If you have powdered items like makeup, protein shake mixes, or baby powder, they need to be packed in containers smaller than 12 ounces (350 mL), which is roughly the size of a soda can. This new rule will start on June 30.
Additionally, any powders in your carry-on might be subject to extra screening by the TSA, and they could open the containers. If TSA officers can’t identify a powder, it may be thrown away. To avoid any issues, the TSA suggests putting larger amounts of powders in your checked luggage.
Even though this might sound like a new policy, it’s not entirely unfamiliar for travelers. The TSA began checking and limiting powder containers in carry-ons for domestic flights last summer. Michael England, a TSA spokesman, mentioned that most international airlines have been doing these powder inspections voluntarily since last year.
