Increased Mortality Among Bahamian Swimming Pigs Linked to Tourists Providing Alcohol

Seven swimming pigs in the Bahamas have died after tourists were reportedly feeding them rum and beer. In response, the Bahamian government has banned tourists from feeding these famous swimming pigs, which reside in Exuma.

Wayde Nixon, one of the pigs’ owners, shared that seven pigs had died and around 15 were still alive. He explained that the pigs received the wrong types of food. Nixon mentioned that the situation was getting out of hand with people bringing all sorts of food, giving the pigs beer and rum, and even riding on them.

He pointed out that these pigs had been around for almost 30 years without any issues, but now the situation needs to be regulated. The agriculture minister, Alfred Gray, stated that he is collaborating with the ministry of tourism to address the problem. Tourists will still be able to take photos and watch the pigs swim, but feeding them is no longer allowed.
