In recent decades, travel abroad has become much more common due to relaxed borders, greater personal wealth, and the rise of budget airlines. Nowadays, people from all backgrounds enjoy traveling to find warmer climates, different cultures, and tasty food.
To identify which countries have the most well-traveled citizens, the international relocation firm MoveHub examined data from the World Bank and the World Tourism Organization. MoveHub studied international tourist departures from 111 countries between 2007 and 2016 to see which countries’ citizens took the most international trips per capita.
Interestingly, despite having the highest GDP globally, Americans were among the least traveled internationally, averaging only 0.2 trips per person per year. In 2017, only 46% of Americans held a passport, and the country offers significantly fewer vacation days compared to others.
Here are the findings for the most traveled citizens per year:
10. Albania — 1.36 trips per person.
9. Denmark — 1.4 trips per person.
8. Switzerland — 1.42 trips per person.
7. Singapore — 1.44 trips per person.
6. Ireland — 1.44 trips per person.
5. Finland — 1.46 trips per person.
4. Sweden — 1.5 trips per person.
3. Hungary — 1.62 trips per person.
2. Luxembourg — 2.56 trips per person.
1. Hong Kong — 11.4 trips per person.
Despite facing a recent economic slowdown, Hong Kong citizens continue to travel extensively. This high travel frequency is attributed to a relatively high GDP per capita, 12 annual bank holidays, and additional legally mandated vacation time given by companies.
