Thailand, known as the Land of Smiles, is one of the world’s favorite destinations. It’s famous for its stunning tropical islands and beautiful beaches, but there’s so much more to discover!
This country is rich in culture, packed with magnificent natural landscapes, beautiful temples, and amazing food. No matter what kind of traveler you are, Thailand has something to offer. For those on a budget, your money will stretch far here. If you’re in the mood for a luxurious and relaxing holiday, you won’t be let down either.
Thailand is a big country with countless incredible places to explore. While it’s hard to list them all, here are seven must-visit spots in Thailand.
Bangkok
Bangkok, also referred to as the City of Angels, is one of the most visited cities globally and a top spot in Thailand. Most travelers start their Thai adventure in this bustling, humid city. While some visitors think there’s not much to see and head straight to the islands or northern towns, they’re missing out. Bangkok is full of sights and landmarks and offers plenty of activities.
Spend some time visiting Bangkok’s impressive temples and unique spots like the floating markets and the Mae Klong railway market. Don’t miss Wat Pho, the Temple of the Reclining Buddha, which features one of Thailand’s largest Buddha statues, standing 15 meters tall and 46 meters long. Bangkok also has many bustling markets for affordable shopping, some of Asia’s largest shopping malls, and trendy bars.
Fun fact: While we commonly call it Bangkok, the full name of Thailand’s capital is the longest city name in the world!
Kanchanaburi
Kanchanaburi is a beautiful province in western Thailand. The main town shares the name and is known for the Bridge over the River Kwai, part of the historic Death Railway. This railway, constructed during World War II by prisoners of war under Japanese control, came at the cost of thousands of lives. The Hellfire Pass, 75 km from town, was the toughest section to build.
After a somber visit to these historical sites, explore the peaceful countryside. Rent a car or motorbike and visit the province’s stunning waterfalls, Erawan and Huai Mae Khamin, located 60 and 100 km from Kanchanaburi town, respectively.
Chiang Rai
Chiang Rai in Northern Thailand is famous for its unique temple, Wat Rong Khun, or the White Temple. This contemporary temple was rebuilt by a local artist at his own expense after the original fell into disrepair. Despite seeing other temples, you should definitely visit this one as it’s unlike anything else.
Chiang Rai offers more than just the White Temple. You can also enjoy various nature activities. In the evening, head to Phu Chi Dao mountain to catch a breathtaking sunset above the clouds.
Pai
Pai is a charming town in Northern Thailand, surrounded by hills and stunning nature. Although it’s not yet a major tourist hotspot, it’s worth visiting. Pai features beautiful waterfalls, numerous hiking trails, and is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts or those looking to relax and enjoy the scenery. Make sure to visit Pai Canyon and Yun Lai Viewpoint.
Koh Phangan
If you’re in Thailand during the Full Moon, head to Koh Phangan, a top party island, for its famous Full Moon Party on Haad Rin beach. This beach is the party hub, with numerous bars and beach clubs. However, Koh Phangan also offers beautiful beaches for those less interested in partying, making it a great destination for both party-goers and beach lovers.
Ko Lipe
Spend some lazy time in what many call the Maldives of Thailand on Ko Lipe, the southernmost island in Thailand. Known as the most beautiful island in the country, Ko Lipe is perfect for snorkeling right off the coast. Even though it’s off the main tourist path, it’s a must-see, especially if you’re traveling to Southern Thailand.
Krabi
Krabi is a province in Southern Thailand, celebrated for its gorgeous beaches and numerous small islands, over 100 in total. There are plenty of places to explore here. Relax in the Emerald Pool, visit the hot spring waterfalls, and go on an island-hopping tour.
Railay features some of Krabi’s most beautiful beaches and is easily accessible by boat from Krabi town pier or Ao Nang. There are plenty of hotels and restaurants for an extended stay. Ao Nang, just 15 km from Krabi town, is perfect for a quick beach getaway with lovely beaches, restaurants, and shops. Klong Muang beach is another beautiful spot but requires a motorbike or taxi to reach since public transport doesn’t go there.
Krabi is also great for hiking, with several trails in the surrounding hills. Dragon Crest and Tab Kak Hang Nak Nature Trail are particularly scenic.
These seven destinations offer a glimpse into Thailand’s immense variety and beauty, making it a top destination for travelers worldwide.
