WOWAir Set to Expand with Up to 15 New Asian Routes!

Skúli Mogensen, the CEO of WOW air, mentioned in a local newspaper that the airline plans to introduce up to 15 new destinations in Asia. Establishing direct links between Asian destinations and Iceland is expected to boost the number of Asian visitors to Iceland. Additionally, these direct flights from Iceland to Asia would offer North American travelers an alternative route with a convenient stop-over in Iceland.

Skúli highlighted the importance of direct flights to Asia for WOW air’s future growth. He envisions Keflavík Airport evolving into a major international hub for transatlantic passengers, not just for those visiting Iceland.

The airline has experienced rapid growth. Despite only starting flights to North America about three years ago, WOW air now operates flights to over a dozen destinations on the continent. This rapid expansion has raised questions about the sustainability of their growth, especially considering that Reykjavik’s hub is nearly at capacity. Looking ahead, it might make sense for WOW air to consider a partnership with another airline, such as Norwegian, due to their similar business models.

To support the new Asian routes, WOW air will be adding four Airbus A330 Neos to their fleet.
