Planning a trip to Fuerteventura and curious about the best activities and sights there? Fuerteventura, the second largest of the Canary Islands, boasts stunning volcanic landscapes, beautiful white and golden sand beaches, and is a well-known surf destination. Being close to Europe, flights to this island are often quite affordable.
Thanks to its unique volcanic terrain and picturesque beaches, Fuerteventura stands out as one of the most beautiful islands in the archipelago. Its windy conditions make it ideal for wind sports and surfing.
There are so many incredible places to explore in Fuerteventura. Here are some of our top recommendations:
Corralejo: This town on the northeast coast is one of the island’s top holiday hotspots. Two must-visit places here are the Parque Natural de Corralejo and Corralejo’s Grandes Playas (Big Beaches). Parque Natural de Corralejo features vast, shifting sand dunes that lead right down to the ocean. The Grandes Playas boast fine white sand and clear blue waters, making them some of the most stunning beaches in the Canary Islands. Corralejo also offers spectacular views of Lanzarote and Isla de Lobos and serves as a gateway to these nearby islands.
Costa Calma and Playa de Sotavento de Jandía: Located on the scenic Jandía peninsula, these beaches are some of the most beautiful in Fuerteventura. They feature miles of fine white sand and crystal-clear blue waters, along with some of the island’s highest waves, making them a haven for surfers.
Cofete: If you visit Playa de Sotavento de Jandía, don’t miss out on Cofete. This small village on the western part of the Jandía peninsula offers one of the island’s wildest and most secluded beaches—Playa de Cofete. Stretching about 14 km in length and 50 m in width, this golden sandy beach includes a small islet, Roque del Moro, at one end. Although the journey to Cofete requires a car, preferably a 4×4, it’s well worth the effort. Stop by the Mirador de Cofete for breathtaking views of Playa de Cofete and its rugged surroundings. The area also offers excellent hiking and biking trails.
Oasis Wildlife Fuerteventura: Perfect for families, this large theme park and zoo showcases flora and fauna from around the globe. The zoo features animal encounters and shows with birds, sea lions, reptiles, and more. Among visitors’ favorite activities are meeting lemurs and hand-feeding giraffes and elephants.
Betancuria: This charming historic town in the western part of the island is set in a mountainous area. Known for its scenic streets and beautiful churches, Betancuria’s whitewashed buildings are surrounded by palms and rugged hills, making it one of the island’s prettiest towns.
Hiking Trails: Fuerteventura offers numerous hiking opportunities. The Calderon Hondo hike near La Oliva is about 5 km long and leads you to a volcano with an impressive round crater at the top, offering panoramic views of the island. For a more challenging hike, head to Pico de la Zarza, the highest point in Fuerteventura, requiring a 13 km trek that takes about 5 hours. Another popular route is the Montana de Tindaya in the municipality of La Oliva. This mountain is a sacred Natural Monument and a site of great archaeological significance, and you can explore it only with a guide.
Lobos Island (Isla de Lobos): Just a few kilometers north of Fuerteventura, this tiny islet is perfect for a day trip from Corralejo. A short 20-minute boat ride will take you to Lobos Island, known for its beautiful beaches and volcanic landscapes. There’s a 10 km-long walking trail that circles the island. You can also join tours that include snorkeling and glass-bottom boat experiences.
Enjoy your time in Fuerteventura, and make sure to explore these incredible spots!
