Malta’s famous Azure Window rock arch has fallen into the sea after severe storms. The natural limestone formation located near Dwejra Bay in Gozo collapsed following numerous warnings about its rapid deterioration. Fortunately, the arch has been featured in many films, providing a stunning backdrop for scenes in the film industry, including the Dothraki wedding in Game of Thrones.
Signs had been posted along the cliffs to prevent people from walking on top of the arch due to the erosion from its underside. In April 2012, a significant piece of rock had already broken off, making the arch larger and more unstable.
Prime Minister Joseph Muscat expressed his sadness over the loss of this landmark. The site from where one could view it was famously known as Tieqa tad-Dwejra.
